Move Over Ferris Bueller

I have a love/hate relationship with most parenting magazines. I love them for their dead-on interpretations and resolutions to baffling behaviors and childhood challenges. I hate them for their perfectly perky parents and crazy cute kiddos in the glossy photographs, not to mention their obsession while celebrity families.
But this week, a headline on Parenting’s Facebook page caught my attention: How to Take a Mommy Day Off. I had to click and find out what this was all about. I mean, besides the fact that it seems almost as unrealistic as the permagrin on their latest cover girl.
Every Mother’s Day, my husband promises me just that: A Mommy Day Off. Not necessarily on Mother’s Day itself, because, well, the kids would be downright offended. But in the coming weeks, I am supposed to take off for a day and do whatever I want, no questions asked. Guess how many times I’ve done just that….yep, you got it. A big, fat, zero.
Mommy guilt, a busy schedule, the feeling that things will just collapse without me…all reasons why I’ve never actually taken a Mommy Day Off. This year, I’ll have a new excuse – I am working full-time and already don’t see my family as often as I used to. I work outside of the home, most of the time. Trust me, stay-a-home-parents, I agree with you. I don’t deserve this nearly as much as I used to.
Or do I? When was the last time any of us took a day off to read a book, eat out or cook our own favorite meal, have coffee with a friend or take a spinning class? Most of us are so completely overbooked, it’s seems it would make more sense to tackle a messy closet or sort through our kids’ outgrown clothes than take a morning off for yoga. But this article almost gave me permission to do just that….and not just on Mother’s Day either!
I urge you to check out this story – and after you’ve identified with some or all of the reasons why you CAN’T, figure out why you SHOULD take a Mommy Day Off. Maybe it’s the perfect New Year’s Resolution! Take a Mommy Day Off once a month, once a quarter or even once a year! I guarantee it’s more than most of us have done in 2011.
So tell me. If you had a Mommy’s Day Off, just what exactly would you do?
