Happy, Helpful or Just Plain Hilarious!

If only I had several more hours in a day…I might stand a chance at getting through the stack of new books I’ve ordered or received as gifts through the holidays.    Currently I have a New Year’s Resolution bet with my husband to lose ten pounds.  If I win, (and I will!), the prize is an entire weekend to myself.  I can just see myself now, permanently glued to the sofa, in front of a roaring fire with a steaming cup of black tea and my stack of books piled high at my feet.

I am really excited about the newest additions to my library.  For fun, and inspiration to win this fantastic prize, I thought I’d share my new titles.  Not surprisingly, there seems to be at least one for every topic of discussion on The PranaMama!

three martiniThe Three-Martini Playdate by Christie Mellor:  A laugh-out-loud sarcastic analysis of parenting today versus forty years ago (or so).  Mellor hilariously points out the fact that “we were here first!” and identifies ways in which children may be guided toward a quieter, more helpful existence.   I have actually read half of this one, because it’s pure enjoyment before bed.   When I’m finished I am signing the inside cover and passing it on to another mom who will appreciate the sinister tone and references to parental bad behavior.  (Remember folks, it’s a joke!)  Thanks to my sister for this book-it’s just what I needed, to laugh at parenthood and not take myself too seriously.

wisdom of yoga

The Wisdom of Yoga: A Seeker’s Guide to Extraordinary Living by Stephen Cope: I dog-eared and left my December copy of Yoga Journal out for my husband just before Christmas.  Subtle, I know.  I had read the review and identified with YJ’s statement that while there are hundreds of attempts at written explanations of the Yoga Sutras, many of them sit “collecting dust” on the bed-side table.   Stephen Cope is a psychotherapist and senior Kripalu Yoga teacher who has taken 15 years of studying the sutras and interpreted them through storytelling.  His book follows the lives of five struggling characters, all of whom can be enlightened and helped through Patanjali’s teachings.  I can’t wait to dive into this book.

parenting cookbookThe Parenting Cookbook by Kathy Gunst This is an older publication, but it’s always great to have a new cookbook full of tried and true recipes for families.  Gunst is a local author and is known for co-writing several of the Stonewall Kitchen cookbooks from nearby York, Maine.  I received a signed copy as Gunst was selling them in person at a local holiday art sale.  I am excited about the simple recipes which don’t require a long list of ingredients.  Although I love to cook, I simply don’t have a lot of time for gourmet meals these days.

writing motherhood

Writing Motherhood by Lisa Garriques I couldn’t resist a little self indulgence when Christmas shopping online last month.  This title caught my attention, for obvious reasons.  I have started it, but have not gotten very far.  I’m hoping it will help me clarify my thoughts for future PranaMama posts and, if my dreams come true, freelance writer opportunities.

What parenting, health, yoga or food titles are you reading right now?   What would you do for a weekend alone to pour over your favorite books, blogs or magazines?

I hope you win your bet. Stephen Cope’s books are wonderful as are his workshops he offers at Kripalu Center.

Here is another wonderful book in the spirit of yoga to add to your pile.

I love book suggestions. I am shuffling between 3 books right now, but the one that I am loving the most is called Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali. Have you read it? If not, I think you would love it. I appreciate the simplicity that the author manages to bring to her writing connecting the act of mothering and all that it implies with the principles of Buddhism.

Another great suggestion – adding it to my list, it does sound amazing. I am interested in learning more about Buddhism. Thanks Jen!

I recommended The Three Martini Playdate to a friend who returned it without saying a word :( Oh well…I LOVED it!!

  6. You have to really appreciate the sarcasm, and have a certain perspective on parenting, I guess. I think it’s hilarious! I plan to pass it on to my friends – but maybe I will be selective about which ones I think will most enjoy it.
