Buying Local – Another View

I recently read this insightful viewpoint on The Hidden Costs of Being 100% Locavore, and thought it was interesting food for thought.
On the one hand, by choosing to support our local farmers we also minimize oil production and reduce emissions. Â But what about those communities far away who rely on their export of goods to survive? Â Who’s to say what community needs us more, our own, or our less fortunate fellow citizens in places like Alaska?
It’s an interesting debate, I wonder what you think?

what about the food artisans in Italy and all over the world? aren’t they supposed to make a living too, by selling outside their little village? what about not allowing people all over the world to enjoy their delicious foods? i am a locavore as much as i can. but, i would like to ask the fundamentalists: do they ever drink coffee and/or eat chocolate? thank you.

I honestly hadn’t thought much of this point before you brought it up. THank you for getting us to think more globally and openly. There is certainly room for debate- and for buying say, fresh produce, locally when possible – and as Beatrice said, coffee and chocolate from regions and companies that support their farmers and fair trade. thanks for the eye opener!
