Back-to-School Yoga – 10 minutes to Calm!

With many of the nation’s kids going back to school this week, it’s a great time to introduce yoga.  If your house is anything like mine, the kids have become quite used to staying up late, being lazy in the morning and having lots of opportunities to burn off excess energy outdoors and with their friends.

However, when school is in session, it’s a different story.  Many kids are nervous about the new year, or come home with boundless energy after being cooped up for a good part of the day in a classroom.

This quick 10-minute yoga practice is perfect for kids ages 7 and up.  One can attempt and adapt it for younger kids by inserting animal poses, singing songs or by simply discussing the day with your child.  The important thing is to connect with your child and calm the nervous system.  You can see how easily Sarah transforms her niece Charlotte from a bubbly, eager girl to a more subdued, relaxed yogi.

There are many ways to incorporate visualization into your shavasana (corpse pose at the conclusion of this video).  Please see my earlier post titled Magic Stones Help Calm Kids for one option.

Have a great school year!

Thanks for the reminder! My own son has anxiety and doing our deeeeep ocean breaths before we focus to pack his lunch, school papers and backpack together makes all the difference. What’s wonderful is that he actually reminded ME about this ritual on the first day of school on Tuesday! Love your tips – keep ‘em coming. I’m going to link to this from the ChildLight Yoga blog: http://www.childlightyoga.blogspot.com.
